The CEW Eco Beauty Award recognizes a beauty product or product line that has moved toward the goal of sustainability. The Award was established to encourage taking steps towards sustainability within the beauty industry. Eligible beauty products or product lines must have been introduced within the past 3 years, and be currently available at retail in the U.S.

The criteria for this award are based upon the below science-based sustainability principles¹ promoted by The Natural Step. The CEW Eco Beauty Award supports products that are seeking to reduce and eventually eliminate their contribution to each problem and by doing so become more sustainable.

How Are Eco Entries Scored?
Products will be scored on a scale of 1-5 at each life cycle stage through the lens of each sustainability principle on the matrix. Total lack of information in any life cycle will result in a scoring of 1 for the particular life cycle stage and sustainability principle. It’s important that you provide us with as much information as possible on the matrix submission form as finalists will be ranked from the top highest scores.

To move toward the goal of a sustainable society we must:				Examples
		Principle 1 – Reduce and eventually eliminate our contribution to the progressive build-up of substances extracted from the earth’s crust.	(for example heavy metals, use of oil, gas and coal)
	Principle 2 – Reduce and eventually eliminate our contribution to the progressive build-up of chemicals and compounds produced by society.	(for example, dioxins, phthalates, PCBs, and DDT)
	Principle 3 – Reduce and eventually eliminate our contribution to the progressive physical degradation and destruction of nature and natural processes.	(for example, over harvesting forests and paving over critical wildlife habitat)
	Principle 4 – Reduce and eventually eliminate our contribution to conditions that undermine people’s capacity to meet their basic human needs.	(for example, unsafe working conditions and unfair trade)
