A new wave of beauty brands is emerging from Australia, a region noted for its unique flora and fauna, high-performing active naturals and formulations that by necessity need to protect skin from the harsh sun. These brands are being also noted for their clean, non-toxic ingredients sourced via sustainable farming practices. Here, Beauty Insider reviews brands and products from Australia (and neighboring New Zealand) that are fast becoming cult favorites and aim to deliver an Aussie glow.

Sand & Sky

Brand Story: Sand & Sky was founded by twin sisters, Emily and Sarah Hamilton, using quintessentially Australian natural ingredients.
Indigenous ingredients: Australian pink clay detoxifies skin, draws out impurities, tightens pores and invigorates a dull complexion. Other brand ingredients native to Australia include Kakadu plum (which contains concentrated vitamin C), finger lime (which boosts cell turnover and brightens skin) and antioxidant-rich organic mangosteen.

Clean positioning: Sand & Sky is cruelty-free, vegan friendly, contains no secret parabens or sulphates, sourced sustainably and made with recyclable materials.

Signature products: Australian Pink Clay Porefining Face Mask aims to tighten pores and supercharge skin’s glow with hero ingredient pink clay, mangosteen and pomegranate.

Frank Body
Brand Story: Frank Body is on a mission to remove jargon around skin care, and in turn employs a playful, informal tone. Copy such as “unlike your ex, I’m non-toxic” can be found on product packaging.

Indigenous ingredients: Frank Body’s signature ingredient is coffee and coffee seed oil, with additional ingredients that include white clay (the mildest of clays that detoxifies and removes dead skin cells), and goji berry extract (enhances radiance).

Clean positioning: Frank Body is natural, vegan and ‘only tested on bods’.

Signature products: The Brand’s signature Original Coffee Scrub is 100 percent natural, vegan and tackles breakouts and scars. Triumph & Disaster

Brand Story: New Zealand-based Triumph & Disaster uses science and nature to produce naturally-derived, scientifically-engineered products.

Indigenous ingredients: The brand sources local indigenous ingredients, such as Horopito oil, Ponga fern extract and Kawakawa leaf extract, a herb used in traditional Maori healing medicine.

Clean positioning: Unlike many brands, Triumph & Disaster does not claim to be 100 percent natural. “We believe in science… simple natural formulations engineered with honest intentions to produce progressive, safe products”.

Signature products: Gameface Moisturizer protects the skin from the elements, and is designed to be easily absorbed, with ingredients such as Horopito oil, Ponga fern, jojoba extract and vitamin E.

Generation Clay
Brand Story: Generation Clay is a trio of clay masks made from Australian botanicals.

Indigenous ingredients: Generation Clay ingredients include millennial pink kaolin clay, purple bentonite clay (also known as Australian healing clay), and white activated charcoal, together with Aussie ingredient superheroes such as old man weed, desert lime and Kakadu plum. Superfruit Davidson plum, native to Northern Australia, contains anti-aging properties with naturally-derived phyto-active compounds.
Clean positioning: Generation Clay does not explicitly outline its policy on clean ingredients. The brand’s emphasis on indigenous ingredients, including old man weed (used for centuries in Aboriginal herbal medicine), and activated charcoal, implies untampered natural ingredients that deliver a radiant glow.

Signature products: Ultra Violet Brightening Purple Clay Mask, in Pantone’s 2018 color of the year, Ultra Violet, is packed with Davidson plum, as well as desert lime, a shrub native to Queensland and South Australia that hydrates and stimulates collagen.
