Hot in the City at DKNY

The look at the DKNY S/S ’15 show revisited the brand’s 90’s roots, with a take on the diverse New York urban youth culture at the time. The models, a mix of street casting and regular models, were hand- picked for a diverse cast of characters to reflect the vibrant melting pot that is New York.

Makeup:

FACE: Makeup artist Yadim for Maybelline New York prepped skin with Dream Wonder Fluid Touch Foundation and Fit Me! Foundation. He applied Eye Studio Color Tattoo Metal 24HR Cream-Gel Shadow in Barely Branded with his fingers to contour the face. For a sun-kissed look, he applied Dream Bouncy Blush in Coffee Cake on the bridge of the nose, forehead and cheeks. To exaggerate the sweaty look, Yadim lightly sprayed an oil-based spray all over the face.

EYES: For a subtle eye, Yadim applied Eye Studio Color Tattoo Leather 24HR Cream-Gel Shadow in Creamy Beige on the lids and under the bottom lash line. He applied Brow Drama in Dark Brown to the brows and lashes for soft definition.

LIPS: Baby Lips Lip Balm in Quenched gave the lips a nice sheen to complete the look.

Hair:

Created by Eugene Souleiman, Wella Professionals Global Creative Director of Care & Styling, inspiration came from iconic urban hair looks: the gelled wave, zig-zag parts, braids and a pony tail to create a ‘hot in the city’ graphic look reminiscent of the hip hop culture of the ‘80’s and ‘90’s.

To Get the Look:

1. Wash and condition hair using Wella Professionals Brilliance Shampoo and Conditioner to preserve the brilliant shade and shine of color-treated hair.

2. Apply a quarter size amount of Wella Professionals Velvet Amplifier on to the hair, focusing at the roots, then blow dry pulling hair straight and flat to the head.

3. Once hair is dry, section off the back of the hair through the crown from ear to ear and tie the back in to a low ponytail. Spray the top of the head with Wella Professionals Stay Essential Finishing Spray to keep the hair perfectly flat and in place.
4. Using a fin tail comb, create a zig-zag part in the center of the top section of hair. Then tease out some wisps of hair at the front of the hairline.

5. Using a soft bristle brush take each side section of hair and gently pull down and back to secure in the pony tail, spray with Wella Professionals Stay Essential Finishing Spray as you go to ensure that the hair is perfectly flat and there are no flyaways.

6. Spray the ponytail with Wella Professionals Ocean Spritz to give a more matte textured effect to the ponytail.

7. Using a tint brush apply Wella Professionals Sculpt Force Gel to the roots of each wisp of hair, then work the gel through the length of the hair with your fingers. Sculpt the hair in to a wave across the forehead. Repeat this with each wisp.
8. Using a diffuser, dry the gelled pieces of hair in place, then finally finish off with a spritz of Wella Professionals Stay Essential Finishing Spray.

Geometric Shapes at Eva Fehren

Lead Manicurist, Deborah Lippmann, said of Eva Fehren’s presentation, “The models seem surreal, literally coming out of the wall; their hands adorned with geometric jewels. Eva expressed desire to play with darkness and light, using the contrast of shadowing and highlighting of planes to emphasize and sharpen angles, like the facets of cut gems. In collaboration with the makeup and hair looks, I used contouring as a muse for the shape and color of the nails.”

To Get The Nail Look:

1. Deborah contoured the nails using her Smooth Operator 4-way nail buffer, creating a slightly longer oval shape. (Tip used where necessary.)
2. To prep the nail plate, she exfoliated the cuticle with her signature Cuticle Remover and then applied 2-Second Nail Primer to cleanse the nails and remove any excess oils or residue.
3. For the base, Deborah applied a coat of Gel Lab Base Coat and allowed 2 minutes of drying time prior to lacquer application.

4. Deborah then applied two coats of Shifting Sands, waiting 2 minutes between coats.
5. One stroke of Magic In the Moonlight (Barneys New York Exclusive) was applied vertically down the center of the nail to create a highlight contour, a modern version of the ombre.
6. After waiting 2 minutes to dry, one coat of Gel Lab Top Coat was applied to seal the nails and prevent chipping. The Wait Is Over quick dry drops were added as a finishing touch to ensure faster drying time.

7. For added hydration, The Cure and Rich Girl SPF 25 Hand Cream were massaged into the hands and cuticles, respectively.

Hair:

Lead Stylist Joseph DiMaggio said he wanted to carry through Eva’s geometric shapes seen in her collection into the hair look. “Taking inspiration from a piece of dagger jewelry (necklace and earrings) in the collection, I created an homage through darted parting. Ultimately this look translated into what looked like an arrow with feathers in the back. We wanted it to be a style that looked sleek, clean and subtle, so as not to take away from the beautiful jewelry.”

How to Get The Hair Look:

1. Apply a golf-ball size of Davines This Is a Volume Boosting Mousse throughout the hair and blow dry perfectly straight and smooth.

2. Create two sharp parts that both start at the center point of the hairline and section out towards the crown, creating an elongated triangle that is 2 inches wide its base. Tie off to be revisited at Step 4, while the rest of the look is completed.
3. Use a fine tooth comb to brush remaining hair into a sleek low ponytail at the nape of the neck and tie off with an elastic.

4. Flat iron the triangle on top of the head section by section to ensure it is smooth and straight.

5. Twist the top section of the hair all the way from the hairline to the crown, and then down to the ponytail, creating an arrowhead. Secure it to the low ponytail using a tie.

6. Apply Davines This Is A Relaxing Moisturizing Fluid to hands and lightly touch palms over the whole look to keeping everything light

7. Finish look by applying Davines This is a Medium Hold Hairspray all over for shine and hold.

The Gardens of Kyoto Japan at Pamela Rolland

As an ode to Japan and cherry blossoms, lead makeup artist, Matin Maulawizada for Laura Mercier, created a fashion-forward monochromatic look. He was inspired by a “Geisha-esque” image of American model Guinvere van Seenus photographed by Steven Meisel. The final look was “effortless, but dramatic.”

Face: A flawless, youthful complexion
• Matin first prepped with the skin with Laura Mercier Repair Eye Serum, applying it on the t-zone, underneath eyes and on the cheekbones to illuminate the skin.
• Next, he massaged Laura Mercier Foundation Primer into the skin to create an even canvas.
• He then dabbed Laura Mercier Smooth Finish Flawless Fluide in one shade lighter than the models’ skin all over the face to provide lightweight coverage.
• To eliminate any puffiness and to brighten the under-eye area, he applied Laura Mercier High Coverage Concealer.
• Lastly, to ensure the makeup stayed in place on the runway, he swept Laura Mercier Invisible Setting Powder over the entire face.

Cheeks: Fashion-forward cheeks
• In order to create the exaggerated cheek look, Matin applied Laura Mercier Bonne Mine Stick Face Colour in Bronze Glow to the tops of the cheeks and around the eyes.
• On top of the Bronze Glow, he applied Laura Mercier Crème Cheek Colour outside the eye, on the temple, brow bone, in the crease of the eye, lightly under the lash line and high on the cheek bones, steering clear of the apples of the cheeks.
• He then used Laura Mercier Crème Cheek Colour in Oleander under the eye, in the inner rim and on the cheeks, to soften them.
• Lastly, to highlight the cheeks, Matin brushed Laura Mercier Pearl Glow Veil, part of the Bonne Mine Palette, over the lid, the brow bone and high on the cheekbones.

Eyes: Defined brown eyes

• First, Matin applied Laura Mercier Caviar Stick Eye Colour in Cocoa at the lash line, blending it up and out and also around the bottom of the eye.

• He then swept Laura Mercier Baked Eye Colour in Hot Chocolate, a Sephora exclusive, on top of the lids, adding the shadow to the outer corner of the eye and emphasizing the line of the eye to frame it.
• For the final touch of glamour, he added

Laura Mercier Faux Lash Mascara in Black and filled in the models’ brows to create a strong brow.

Lips: Soft, rosy lips

• To complete the look, Matin applied a layer of Laura Mercier Lip Glace in Bare Babyas a base.
• He then topped the lips with Laura Mercier Second Skin Cheek Colour in Rose Petal, focusing on the middle of the lips and applied Laura Mercier Crème Cheek Colour in Oleader on the sides and outer corner of the lips.
