As consumers reimagine their beauty regimens due to a more relaxed social environment, National Lipstick Day couldn’t fall at better time. Lipstick. Is. Back.

According to NPD’s 2022 Makeup Attitude and Usage Report, lipstick and lip gloss are the top two makeup products that consumers purchase on impulse. The term “the more, the merrier” truly applies to lipstick wearers, approximately half of all lipstick users own four or more lipsticks and 27 percent own six or more.  NPD also reported that lipstick sales grew 44 percent in Q1 and 28 percent in Q2, marking it as the fastest-growing makeup segment from January 2022 to June 2022.

Search data firm Spate cited in a recent report on makeup trends that the U.S. has nearly 800,000 monthly average searches for lipstick. Spate also noted multiple significant lipstick search terms experiencing year-over-year growth, including matte lipstick (74.9 percent), long-lasting lipstick (86.3 percent), and waterproof lipstick (147.4 percent).
