Cosmetic surgery consultant Wendy Lewis recently attended the American Academy of Dermatologist’s Annual Meeting. Here’s what Wendy had to report from Denver, Colorado.

There may have been more dermatologists queuing up to sample new creams at the American Academy of Dermatology Conference in Denver than Colorado residents standing on line to buy their ounce of legalized medical marijuana. By all accounts, the professional channel for advanced/clinical skin care is healthy and thriving, albeit saturated and fiercely competitive.

As one would expect, anti-agers led the way, with acne coming in a close second, and there were some innovative targeted products for the eye zone, scars and stretchmarks, thinning hair and sensitive skin conditions. And the derms who made the trek to the Mile High City went home with oversized totebags loaded with samples to bring back to their offices.

In the age reversing category, the most notable launch came from an unexpected newcomer to the physician channel – Elizabeth Arden Rx. The range was created in partnership with formulator Joe Lewis, whose U.S. CosmeceuTechs, LLC, has developed a plethora of popular anti-agers including Prevage (idebenone), Revaleskin and Priori (coffeeberry). The line was developed with Triple Protection Factor Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 50+, or TPF 50 for short, based on a combination of three protective and restorative ingredients: DNA Enzyme Complex, Antioxidant Complex and broad spectrum SPF 50+ sun protection in a moisturizing base. The texture is silky and light with an elegant look and feel.

G.M.Collin, a 25 year-old Montreal-based spa brand, found its way into the medical skin care arena with the launch of GMC MEDICAL, a comprehensive range of a dozen sku’s that addresses acne, skin aging, sun damage, and pre and post medical esthetic procedures.

New and targeted age-reversing formulas of note include Revision Skincare DEJ Eye Cream comprised of extracts, peptides and antioxidants to improve fine lines, firmness and skin elasticity.NeoStrata’s newest addition, Skin Active Triple Firming Neck Cream, is touted for rejuvenating the neck and décolleté areas with Swiss Apple Stem Cell Extract and an array of proprietary ingredients.

ZO Skin Health, Inc., from Dr. Zein Obagi, debuted two Getting Skin Ready [GSR] Systems, comprehensive kits designed for Normal to Dry and Normal to Oily skin types, as well as two new specialized pigmentation treatment programs, ZO Multi-Therapy Hydroquinone System and ZO Non-Hydroquinone Hyperpigmentation System, to offer physicians the option of customizing a regimen and for long term maintenance.

It was also a banner year for L’Oréal with exciting new entries from some of their active cosmetics brands. Skinceuticals captured attention by featuring a total of 13 scientific publications, and the new Resveratrol B E Antioxidant Night Concentrate, and La Roche Posay showed its new Anthelios 60 Ultra Light Lotion Spray with Cell-OX Shield that boasts a new Micro shield technology to protect skin during intense UV conditions and in water.

On the acne front, newcomer DermWorx introduced AcneWORX Gentle Acne Treatment Cream with 2% salicylic acid to break the acne cycle in a gentle way. Sensitive skin treatment was a recurring theme at the meeting, based on both physician and patient demand. Eau Thermale Avene XeraCalm AD made its debut for treating atopic dermatitis and itching, and includes Lipid-Replenishing Cleansing Oil, Lipid-Replenishing Balm, and Lipid-Replenishing Cream.

Hair thinning is another segment that was in high demand. Glytone by Ducray Hair Loss Range is a new range of hair loss solutions available in physicians’ offices that includes Anaphase Cream Shampoo to strengthen weak, thinning hair and prepare the scalp for hair loss treatments, along with Neoptide Hair Lotion Spray for women with chronic hair loss.

Merz introduced a line extension to its popular direct to consumer brand Mederma. Mederma PM Intensive Overnight Scar Cream is formulated to work at night, when skin naturally regenerates faster, to improve the appearance, size-color, and texture of scars on the face and the body.

Valeant Pharmaceuticals International is a company to watch, as they are gobbling up everything in their path with no signs of slowing down anytime soon. They recently acquired Obagi Medical Products and Precision Dermatology, and entered into a global venture with hair care firm Living Proof, Inc. to develop, distribute and commercialize products for aesthetic dermatology to be sold exclusively through Valeant’s massive physician channel. At the AAD, they presented the first fruit of this collaboration based on the proprietary, cross-linking polymer film technology, Strateris. The new Neotensil daily under eye reshaping temporary film costs $500 for a six week supplyand available only through physicians’ offices.

San Francisco is on the docket for the next AAD meeting, to be held March 20-24, 2015.
