Beautystreams, the only global trend forecasting service specialized in beauty and packaging, attended Cosmoprof Bologna in early April and today they shared with CEW Beauty Insider their take on the world’s largest beauty fair. As buzz for the North America show this July gears up, let’s look at what Beautysteams saw this spring:

Despite a 7% increase in visitor numbers to 207,238 and a sharp 21% uptick in international visitors, which represented 28% of traffic, making 2014 another record year for show organizer SoGeCos, the mood on the ground is lacking in dynamism. Perhaps due to the economic ambiance in Europe, exhibitors feel the show is slower than usual, and cite a lower quality of visitors. Exhibitor numbers rise 2.5% to 2,450.

Event highlights include the Extraordinary Gallery, an area focusing on niche and innovative brands, and The Powder Factory, an initiative at Cosmopack that highlights the production chain for powders.

The former, designed as an incubator for innovative beauty brands, welcomes make-up players including Anastasia Beverly Hills, Eve Pearl, LVX and Marinho Paris among its 28 exhibitors from the various product segments.

Show Highlights

A congregation point for thousands of visitors and a real hub of the show, the Agora, has a new identity – step inside and observe elegant bottles of Deco-inspired perfume displayed on tall pedestals, before embarking on a sensorial journey through a perfume museum, absorbing olfactory experiences, video clips on the history of fragrance, and the mock-up of a perfume museum recently created in Venice. Also of note in the Agora is the Vogue Beauty Talents Lounge, where the magazine is displaying a selection of iconic covers in celebration of the 50th anniversary of its Italian Edition.

The Powder Factory, for its part, follows on from last year’s successful The Lipstick Factory installation. In a giant space between two exhibition halls, lab-coated technicians show and explain the various steps in the powder production process, from the raw materials utilized via mixing to pressing and stamping and finally the packaging of the finished product.

In addition, Cosmopack exhibitors are invited to give free reign to their creativity with “The Wall” a competition and display at the show inviting them to contribute a product that evokes how their business connects with the Cosmoprof image for 2014, a woman emerging from a purple blossom.

Trends

Here are some of the trends we spotted:

Brow Wow: Moving away from the false lash craze, the brow has been an ongoing focus on the runways these past few seasons, used to frame the face. Brows are unashamedly thick and dark, flaunting decorative effects like glitter and gems.
Layer On: At the opposite end of the spectrum of the multi-functional BB and CC creams, there is also a trend for layering cosmetics, with many several companies coming out with products like primers and sealants for the face and eye areas, similar to the concept of top and base coats for nail polish.
Non-Invasive Medical Hair Treatments: Non-invasive medical treatments need no introduction in the skin care universe. Such concepts are now beginning to filter into the hair care world, as witnessed by some of the innovations presented at Cosmoprof in terms of mesotherapy to prevent hair loss and promote re-growth.
Full Care Hair Products: Consumers are looking for more holistic treatments in the hair care universe. The focus on general wellbeing is resulting in increased demand from consumers for products that not only make the hair healthier and glossier, but also treat the scalp, according to exhibitors at Cosmoprof, who are adapting their offer accordingly.
On the Go Fragrances: As the jet-setting trend evolves, people also want fragrances to go. Affordable, refillable, and disposable products that save on time, money, and space are prevailing.
3-D Inspired Packaging Design:Technology is increasingly playing an integral part in our lives, and the beauty packaging world is no exception. 3D printing applications are filtering into the beauty arena, for example, and while their use in packaging remains largely prototypal, mainly due to the costs involved, 3D printing is becoming a source of inspiration, notably in caps.

Digital Printing on Metal: Developments in digital printing are opening up new avenues for the use of photos on beauty packaging, bringing costs down and adding a new avenue of development for beauty firms.
