The skin care category is showing the healthiest gains in all of beauty; sales were up 7.4% for the second quarter of 2019 to $1.4 billion, according to The NPD Group. But the industry is challenged by consumers flocking to the next buzzy ingredient or rushing to buy a product touted by an influencer. That’s resulted in low brand loyalty. Exacerbating that is the need for instant results, and consumers giving up on a product when they don’t see immediate improvements. And, too often, the expensive active ingredients in many products don’t permeate the epidermis—instead, they sit on top of the skin only to be washed off.

But, that’s about to change.

“To be effective, ingredients must not only be absorbed into the skin, but should also be present in the skin in their active form, at a therapeutic concentration and be available for a sufficient time to perform their intended function,” explains Dr. Suzanne Saffie-Siebert, the founder of Good Science Beauty.

Suzanne, a biotech expert, put her knowledge to work to create a line that promotes long-term skin health, not just skin care.

“Many skin care ingredients are susceptible to degradation through contact with water or air, reducing their efficacy. Protecting them so they can be delivered in their active form is a further challenge,” Suzanne explains. While custom liposomes and polymers (currently branded under various trademarks of brands) work on essentially a similar basis, Good Science Beauty has been able to develop a radically different bio-courier—the elemental, biodegradable and bioavailable Good Silicon+.

Good Science Beauty: Where Science Meets Skin Care

The pillars of Good Science Beauty include both technologically advanced and clean formulations, as well as sustainable packaging. These characteristics are emerging as “must haves” for consumers. Good Science Beauty is results driven, harnessing Suzanne’s healthcare learnings and translating them to skin care.

Suzanne’s research directed her to silicon—not silicone the man-made polymer but rather the second most abundant element in the earth’s crust and the third most found trace element in the human body. It is an essential micro-mineral critical in collagen production. “Silicon revolutionized technology; now it’s set to advance skin health,” says Suzanne.

Advanced and patented silicon-based bio-courier technology created for the targeted delivery of pharmaceuticals and gene-therapy can also be applied to skin care to dramatically enhance the performance of proven skin care ingredients—making them work more efficiently. Suzanne’s breakthrough was inventing and patenting the first biodegradable, fully bioabsorbable silicon. The bio-courier, trademarked Good Silicon+, gets the right ingredients to the right place—at the right time—much like a GPS system. Good Science Beauty’s products feature a unique combination of proven key ingredients, such as willow bark, glutathione, melatonin and hyaluronic acid, that boost each other’s performance to solve a specific problem.

With traction gaining online, Good Science Beauty is now poised to bring its scientific-backed line-up to physical U.S. stores.

Q&A with Good Science Founder Dr. Suzanne Saffie-Siebert

CEW: What made you get into the skin care business?

Suzanne Saffie-Siebert: It all started with blemish prone skin. Teenagers resort to antibiotics to treat spots and blemishes and I knew you shouldn’t have to take antibiotics for that, especially because of the risk of developing a resistance. There is a psychological impact on teenagers with blemishes and I wanted to use my scientific background to help. It became my personal mission because everyone has a right to be beautiful but not at the cost of your health. There are surveys that show that for most people, healthy skin is almost as important for their personal happiness as family and overall health. Skin care really matters. Frustratingly, a lot of people spend time and effort on skin care with disappointing results. I’ve been through this myself for many years.

CEW: How did you merge science with beauty?

S.S.S.: We made it our goal to use science to solve problems without creating new ones. Together with my R&D team, I spent almost 10 years developing a unique technology for the targeted delivery of pharmaceuticals. And we found that this technology can also make skin care ingredients significantly more effective. We call it Good Silicon+. The Good Science Beauty brand was born from cutting edge technology that we applied to skin care.

CEW: What are some of your star products?

S.S.S.:One is 001-Pu Purifying Face Cream, which is formulated for blemish-prone skin. Another is 003-Hy Hydrating Face Cream, which is formulated with hyaluronic acid and omega 3, making the formula rich in skin-repairing DHA and EPA, and is delivered by our Good Silicon+ technology. Initially only available on goodsciencebeauty.com, we recently expanded into brick-and-mortar through partnerships with Urban Outfitters and Neighborhood Goods, the retail concept bringing direct-to-consumer brands to physical environments.

CEW: What’s next for Good Science Beauty?

S.S.S.: Research and development never stops. We will continue to generate and publish more data to underpin our promise. We are particularly excited about re-thinking environmentally- and skin-friendly SPFs and continue to offer solutions to skin health problems. At Good Science Beauty, we are building our growing community of Good Skin Scientists. Growth will continue from building partnerships with brick-and-mortar retailers who are aligned with our mission. And, there are opportunities for international expansion through partners. Finally, we support youth in STEM through a program called Science as Force for Good.
