L’Oréal has released a new wearable through its La Roche-Posay brand, My Skin Track UV, designed to detect both UVA and UVB ray exposure so consumers can make informed sun-safety decisions. The announcement of its availability to consumers was made at CEW’s Connected Consumer Conference on November 14 by Guive Balooch, Global Vice President of L’Oréal’s Technology Incubator, while discussing the company’s tech advancements.

“Our research has long indicated the need for better consumer understanding of personal UV exposure,” said Guive. “We created this battery-free sensor to seamlessly integrate into the lives, and daily routines, of those using it. We hope the launch of this problem-solving technology makes it easier for people to make smart, sun-safe choices.”

The sensor was developed to be discreet; it measure 12mm wide and 6mm high. It is waterproof and has a sturdy wire clip so users can conveniently attach it to clothing or accessories. Notably, the device is battery-free as it is activated by the sun and powered by the user’s smartphone using near-field communication. In addition to the UV data, the app seamlessly integrates with Apple HealthKit to provide insights into an individual’s exposure to pollution, pollen and humidity.

“La Roche-Posay believes that better looking skin starts with healthy habits. That’s why we are committed to bringing scientific progress directly to consumers, so that they can make well-informed decisions that will help them take exceptional care of their skin,” said Laetitia Toupet, Global General Manager of La Roche-Posay. “The research that went into the development of this technology indicated that wearables have the power to inspire true behavioral change by helping people measure and understand their exposure to various environmental aggressors and take action.”

MySkin Track UV is available now for $60 at apple.com and select U.S. Apple Store locations.
