Potential beauty stocking stuffers, such as eyeliners and fragrance minis, will help drive sales this holiday season due to their affordable price points, according to The NPD Group’s Beauty Holiday 2014 Outlook.

“The smaller items that don’t generally get the big headlines will have a big impact on the market this holiday season, taking advantage of opportunities in unexpected spaces is key in today’s shifting prestige beauty market,” said Karen Grant, Vice President and Global Industry Analyst, NPD. “The positive direction that much of the U.S. prestige beauty industry is headed in this holiday season will be given an added boost by brands’ efforts to connect with and engage their consumers in inventive ways.”

Overall, makeup is leading prestige beauty, with the category increasing 10% versus last year, and sales expected to continue to thrive throughout the holidays. Because consumers have continued to seek out color and definition from eye and lip products, these two segments have been primarily responsible for driving the increase.

According to the report, fragrance also has a positive outlook, as it is always a top category during the holidays, and the fifth most-popular purchase of the season. Adriana Medina Baez, Perfumer, Givaudan shared her optimism about holiday fragrance sales at CEW’s recent Beauty Insider Series, Fragrance: The Next Chapter. “What is more beautiful than to give the gift of emotion and craft? It’s the season of giving,” she said.

Surprisingly, sales of skin care are slowing down, making this year, the first time in a decade that the category’s overall performance is below fragrance. Therefore, skin care should capitalize on the growth of smaller subcategories to keep it afloat this season, recommended NPD.
