In the spirit of delivering skin care results in an instant, the concept behind new beauty company, Patchology, is making some waves in the beauty arena.

Borrowing transdermal patch technology from its parent, Iontera, an innovator behind next-generation nicotine and pain patches, Patchology last year launched an Energizing Eye Patch at select Neiman Marcus stores and at Bergdorf Goodman. The item, designed to deliver cucumber extract, hyaluronic acid, skin smoothing peptides and vitamin C to brighten eyes in just 20 minutes, was a success and quickly expanded to 40-plus Neiman Marcus doors, as well as to HSN. It is currently working on expansion with several major retailers.

“It’s all about targeted, more powerful skin care,” said Patchology CEO, Chris Hobson.

While the science that fuels skin care innovation has developed numerous effective ingredients, the common challenge for all products is penetrating the stratum corneum, the barrier layer of skin, which also keeps harmful elements out. Patchology’s patches, Chris said, help larger molecules to penetrate the skin by using micro-current technology, which applies “a gentle driving force” to get through the layer. Chris said patch technology can help millions of molecules to penetrate the stratum cornuem compared to topical creams.

For its April 2015 launch, the company scouted out New York Fashion Week in the fall of 2014, talking to makeup artists about what they were looking for from a skin care product.

“We discovered that they wanted something that would quickly prime the skin. So we came up with masks that worked in five minutes to deeply hydrate and prepare the skin for makeup.”

A Hydrate FlashMasque Facial Sheet, which sells for $50 for a box of eight, uses hyaluronic acid and vitamin B5 to hydrate skin. They’re designed to fit a face with optimized serum levels to eliminate issues such as serum dripping down the neck. There’s also no need to rinse following use of the FlashMasques—the serum, which is gently fragranced, absorbs into the skin. There are also Illuminate and Exfoliate version of FlashMasques. It should be noted that beyond the FlashMasques, as a result of NYFW the brand also created FlashPatch Eye Gels which contain Hydrasurge5 technology. The translucent under-eye patches only take five minutes to work, just like the masques.

Chris said Patchology is currently working on items that will address dark spots, dry nails and cracked heels. Ideas for new patches come from a variety of sources, including retail buyers with specific beauty needs and crowdsourcing feedback. Beginning in June, to help drive sales, Patchology said it will begin to sample its sheet masques with select retail partners so consumers can test the feel and results before purchasing.

And don’t expect a cleanser, moisturizer or toner from Patchology any time soon.

“We know what our niche is,” Chris said.
