Sephora has updated it Clean at Sephora “formulated without list” to now include over 50 ingredients, up from 13 last year. Since its 2018 debut, the LVHH-owned retailer received some criticism that its guidelines weren’t rigorous enough. Now, notable potentially harmful ingredients are banned, including BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole), ethanolamines DEA/TEA/MEA/ETA, toluene, carbon black, mercury and mercury compounds, aluminum salts, lead and lead acetate to name a few. Sephora is now also requiring brands to test for contaminants such as 1, 4 Dioxane, and it has ingredient thresholds in place to monitor levels of certain ingredients.

With this update, the Clean at Sephora assortment now includes 68 brands versus 61 in 2018, including a few new brands such as First Aid Beauty, Flora + Bast, Glow Recipe, Lord Jones, Lululemon, Primera and Saint Jane.
