Why is CEW membership important to you?
I joined CEW about 3 years into my career in the beauty industry and it was one of the best decisions that I could have made. First, through volunteering, I met other ambitious young newbies that created a wonderful support network. Second, through volunteering, I was put in unique positions to meet executives that I would not have had access to any other way- I used that time wisely! Third, I had an amazing experience with the mentoring program.
Do you have any tips for getting the most out of CEW membership?
Get involved! You can’t win from the sidelines. Being a member of CEW offers the opportunity to meet so many great women (and men) in this industry- take full advantage of it! No one can make it alone. Align with like-minded people and grow together. There is room for everyone!
What advice would you give someone who is inspired by your career and one day wants to be in a similar position?
Open yourself up to possibilities. This industry has so much to offer someone who is willing to put themselves out there. Meet new people, stray out of your comfort zone and don’t be afraid to take on additional responsibilities that can be a building block to the next step in your career.
How important has mentorship been in your career journey?
I cannot express enough the importance of mentors. I have had mentors at all stages of my career, some were meant only for a season, while others become lifelong friends. My first mentor gave me my start in the industry and taught me the importance of being a “brain” instead of a “pair of hands”. He persuaded me to get out there and be active in the industry organizations, write articles, speak at conferences- basically get out there and make a name for myself. Without his gentle nudges, I don’t think that I would be where I am right now.
At this point in my career, I’m not shy about claiming people whom I admire as a mentor. It typically takes them by surprise, but they come around quickly!
